A trash fire at a decommissioned military base in Irvine on Sunday sent a massive plume of smoke into the air above Orange County.

The blaze was reported about 4:20 p.m. at Tierra Verde Industries, a recycling center in Orange County Great Park, said Capt. Steve Hurdle, spokesman for the Orange County Fire Authority said. The park is part of the former Marine Corps Air Station El Toro.

Twenty-five firefighters responded to the scene, and the fire was expected to be extinguished “shortly,” the captain said.

No structures were threatened by flames, according to the Fire Authority.

Blazes such as the one that broke out Sunday were common occurrences at the recycling center, Hurdle said.
