The call for help was reported near the intersection of Arrow Boulevard and Archibald Avenue (map) just before 2:30 p.m., the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department stated in a news release Monday.

Vega arrived at the scene within minutes of the call to find Candice Hernandez in labor in the back seat of her vehicle, which was pulled over in a field. He determined that delivering the baby at the scene was the only option.

With the help of the baby’s father, John Hernandez, Vega delivered Emma Rose Hernandez at 2:33 p.m., according to the news release.

“Vega assisted John with the delivery, coaching him until Miss Emma made her debut,” the department said on Facebook.

The sergeant wrapped the baby up in a T-shirt and waited for the ambulance to arrive, the Sheriff’s Department said in a Facebook post.

“It’s quite the career highlight when you get to witness and help a miracle into this world,” the post read.

Candice and Emma Hernandez were taken to San Antonio Regional Hospital for evaluation.

Emma Hernandez weighed 7.4 pounds and was 18 1/2 inches tall.

Both mother and daughter were doing great and released from the hospital later that day, the news release stated.

Correction: A previous version of this post incorrectly stated the height of baby Emma Hernandez. The story has been updated.
