An email and photos sent to a sheriff’s watch commander in Victorville documented a deputy’s act of generosity toward an older man in a wheelchair, earning the sworn officer praise on social media Friday.
The photos show a uniformed “Deputy Sims” sitting down at a bus stop next a somewhat disheveled gray-haired man who is apparently waiting. The deputy then helps the man onto a bus.
A witness’ photos and a description of what occurred were sent Thursday afternoon to Sims’ San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department supervisor, Sgt. Jerry Shelton, with an appreciation for the deputy’s actions.
“It happens much, much more than you would think,” Shelton said of the deputy’s kindness. “Nobody ever sees that part.”
Though Shelton said many of his deputies perform such acts daily, he wasn’t surprised at all when he saw the photos showed Deputy Nathan Sims, who has been with the department 3 1/2 years.
“That’s his character. He’s just a super, super good, humble man,” Shelton said.
The photos were shared on the department’s Facebook page Friday, prompting thank you messages from followers. The images were taken about 11 a.m. Thursday on Bear Valley Road in Victorville, department spokeswoman Cindy Bachman said.
The letter-writer, “Mr. Haston,” wrote to Shelton that he was passing by when he saw Sims sitting close to the man in the wheelchair.
“The scene led my thoughts to believe that the deputy was paying honor and respect to this gentleman, almost as a friend would, perhaps just keeping him company as he waited for the bus to arrive,” the letter read. “I was in no particular rush so I circled back around through a lot of traffic…I enjoy scenes like this.”
One photo showed a woman offer water to Sims and the man in the wheelchair as they awaited the arrival of the bus, according to the caption.
The letter-writer thanked the deputy and the watch commander for his supervision.
“I have one question,” the letter stated. “Where are the news cameras when these kind services are rendered?”
