The Los Angeles County Fire Department announced the on-duty death of one of its own Sunday night.

“It is with great sadness the #LACoFD share the Active Duty Death of Fire Fighter Jonathan Van Oeffelen on Sunday, March 24, 2024,” the Fire Department posted on Facebook just before 10:30 p.m.

No details surrounding the firefighter’s death were provided but the Department said Van Oeffelen was assigned to Fire Station 52 in the City of Vernon.

“We extend our deepest condolences and prayers to the family, friends, and colleagues of FF Van Oeffelen,” the Fire Department posted. “RIP FF Van Oeffelen 🙏🏼💔🕊”

The Department also made its chaplains, peer support team, behavioral health clinicians and memorial management team available to the Van Oeffelen family and Fire Department personnel.

“Thank you for respecting the privacy of the Van Oeffelen family during this extraordinarily difficult time,” the post read.
