The body of a 75-year-old man found by emergency crews at an apartment building in Inglewood had been decapitated, a coroner’s official confirmed Friday.
Police were called to the 800 block of Glenway Drive (map) at about 12:45 p.m. Thursday to assist Los Angeles County Fire Department personnel, the Inglewood Police Department stated in a news release.
Police did not confirm details of what they found in the apartment but homicide detectives were called to the scene.
The victim, identified as Robert Hollis, was discovered by his son, who went to check on his legally blind father after friends and family had been unable to contact him.
Hollis had been decapitated and his head was not with the body when it arrived at the coroner’s office, said Lt. David Smith of the Los Angeles County coroner’s office.
Hollis was described as a man with a “smile as big as his heart.”
“You’d see him sitting right here on Sunday waiting for a ride to church,” neighbor Sahir Champion said. “Always smiling, just a genuine good guy.”
Video showed crime scene tape blocking the stairway of The Villa Glen apartment building while authorities conducted an investigation inside.
The victim’s sliding glass door on his balcony was also open.
No further information on the Police Department’s investigation were immediately available.
Anyone with information was asked to contact the Police Department at 310-412-5246 or the 24-hour anonymous hotline number at “888-41-CRIME” (888-412-7463).
