A U.S. Navy training jet ran off the end of a runway at Naval Air Station North Island in Coronado on Friday afternoon, landing in the San Diego Bay.

It happened at approximately 2 p.m. as the T-45C aircraft was taking off from runway 29, according to a news release from Lt. Reagan B. Lauritzen, with the Naval Air Force.

The pilot was able to safely eject from the aircraft and was recovered in the water by local boaters, Lauritzen stated.

The pilot was evaluated at a local hospital. No other information about the pilot was released.

The aircraft, stationed out of Meridian, Mississippi, was conducting routine training in advance of qualifying for aircraft carrier landing, according to the Navy.

A safety investigation will be conducted to determine the cause of the crash, the release stated.
