A suspected DUI driver was arrested late Thursday following a collision that left a 32-year-old woman dead in Pomona, police said.
Pomona police were alerted to the two-vehicle crash about 10:45 p.m. by Claremont police who were at the scene on West Arrow Highway and Mariposa Street (map), Sgt. Bert Sanchez of the Pomona Police Department stated in a news release.
Officers arrived to find 32-year-old Marissa Leigh Vasquez, of Pomona, suffering from major injuries, Sanchez stated.
Vasquez was later pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.
A Los Angeles County coroner’s official confirmed her identity, and police said her family had been notified.
The driver of a second vehicle, identified as 37-year-old Michael Daniel Gardner, allegedly fled from the crash on foot, but was found with the help of witnesses that directed officers to his whereabouts, the news release stated.
Gardner, also from Pomona, was allegedly under the influence of alcohol and was driving an unreported stolen 2014 Mercedes-Benz at the time of the crash, according to Sanchez.
Gardner was arrested on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter and grand theft auto.
He was taken to a Los Angeles-area hospital for treatment of minor injuries sustained in the crash, Sanchez said.
Investigators believe Gardner was driving the same vehicle that Claremont Police attempted to stop a short time earlier but sped away.
Due to the high rate of speed and bad weather, the officers did not pursue the car, according to Sanchez.
During a search of the area for the vehicle, officers came across the fatal crash.
