Five weeks after giving birth to her fourth child, Roeuy Garay received devastating news.

The 36-year-old mother was diagnosed with multiple myeloma – an aggressive blood cancer that attacks the kidneys and bones.

In the past 11 months, Garay has gone through chemotherapy and has been hospitalized several times.

A bone marrow transplant will give her the best chance of survival, Garay said.

But the Corona woman needs a donor who shares the same ancestry.

Asians make up only 7 percent of the national registry and her specific ethnicity – Cambodian –  an even smaller percentage.

None of Garay’s sibling were a match.

Now her hope for survival rests in the hands of a stranger.

Kimberly Cheng reports for the KTLA 5 News at 10 on Thursday, Feb. 5, 2015.
