An elderly driver was trapped in his SUV after he struck a power pole, knocking down live electrical wires in Montebello on Thursday night.

It happened around 7: 30 p.m. at Poplar Avenue and Beverly Boulevard, according to a news release from the Montebello Police Department.

The crash resulted in live electrical wires falling to the ground around the vehicle. A transformer was also down, triggering power outages in the area, according to Southern California Edison.

Firefighters were attempting to gain access to the vehicle to get the driver out, aerial video of the scene showed.

By 8:20 p.m., police said that all the occupants had been safely removed from the vehicle.

Police initially reported that there were several occupants in the van, but later confirmed that only the driver was inside.

Residents were being urged to avoid the area.
