The driver was traveling southbound before the morning rush-hour commute when the car plowed over a steel barrier and through a steel gate before coming to a rest on the sidewalk, Bay Area television station KTVU reported. He made it about 400 yards before the Mustang got stuck.

“The airbags were deployed in the vehicle so, after he finally got far enough, he came to a narrowing in the sidewalk where the vehicle became wedged,” said Officer Andrew Barclay with the California Highway Patrol.

Workers with the Golden Gate Bridge District discussed numerous operations before deciding to remove the car with a “reach fork,” according to KTVU.

“I’ve personally never seen anything like this. I’d say this is … very uncommon,” Barclay told the local news station.

The 22-year-old driver — identified as Daniel Soto — suffered minor injuries and was treated at a hospital, KTVU reported. He was later arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence.
