The 30th annual AIDS Walk Los Angeles kickoff Sunday morning, bringing an estimated 25,000 people to West Hollywood and causing multiple street closures.
The fundraising event raised nearly $2 million before the estimated two-and-a-half-hour walk began, according to the AIDS Walk Los Angeles website.
Participants were advised to arrive early because parking was first-come, first-serve and all “no parking” and “tow away” zones would be enforced.
Sign-in was scheduled to begin at 8:30 a.m., with the opening ceremony featuring speeches from Mayor Eric Garcetti and West Hollywood Mayor John D’Amico starting at 9:15 a.m.
The 6.2-mile walk would start and end in West Hollywood park, beginning at 10 a.m.
Celebrity entertainers; including singer Paula Abdul, “The Price is Right” host Drew Carey, “Glee” star Alex Newell, celebrity stylist and TV personality Carson Kressley, “Orange is the New Black” star Michael Herney, among half a dozen others were expected to make appearances.
Street closures included the following areas and times:
- North San Vicente Boulevard from Santa Monica Boulevard to Melrose Avenue, from 6 a.m. Saturday to 6 p.m. Sunday
- East side of North San Vicente Boulevard from Beverly Boulevard to Melrose Avenue, 6 a.m. to 3 p.m.
- North Robertson Avenue from Melrose Avenue to Santa Monica Boulevard, 6 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
- North La Peer Drive from Melrose Avenue to Santa Monica Boulevard, 6 a.m. to 12 p.m.
- Santa Monica Boulevard from North Doheny Drive to Holloway Drive, 6 a.m. to 12 p.m.
- North La Cienega Boulevard from Santa Monica Boulevard to Melrose Avenue, 6 a.m. to 12 p.m.
- Melrose Place from North La Cienega Boulevard to North Orlando Avenue 6 a.m. to 12 p.m.
- Melrose Avenue from North San Vicente Boulevard to North La Brea Avenue, 6 a.m. to 1 p.m.
- North La Brea Avenue from Melrose Avenue to Beverly Boulevard, 7 a.m. to 2 p.m.
- Beverly Boulevard from North La Brea Boulevard to San Vicente boulevard, 7 a.m. to 2 p.m.
