Friends, family members and classmates gathered Tuesday night at a candlelight memorial at Carl Hankey K-8 School in Mission Viejo for five teenagers killed in a fiery solo-car crash on the 5 Freeway.

The teens were on their way home from Buena Park early Saturday morning after attending Knott’s Scary Farm when their car veered off the freeway and crashed into an embankment, according to the Orange County Fire Authority.

Among the victims was middle school student Matthew Melo.

Melo’s cousin broke down as he expressed the overwhelming loss he felt.

“When I got the news, I just lost it,” Melo’s cousin told the crowd. “I didn’t just lose a cousin, I lost my best friend and a brother.”

Melo, Brandon Moreno and Alex Sotelo were all killed in the crash.

The boys were part of a close-knit group who grew up playing soccer together.

They were remembered Tuesday for their fun-loving spirit.

“We love you guys very much and I know you’re up there playing in heaven,” one of the speakers told the crowd.

The three boys, along with two girls who played water polo at Laguna Hills High School — Jenny Campos and Jenny Bahena — died in the crash.

The only survivor was the unlicensed driver 16-year-old Bradley Morales.
