A 101-year-old Los Angeles resident was killed Wednesday in by a hit-and-run driver who fled but was stopped by witnesses until police could detain him, authorities said.

The victim, Jose Noriega, was crossing Lorena Street in a marked crosswalk at Opal Street in Boyle Heights (map) when he was stuck about 6 a.m., according to the Los Angeles Police Department’s Central Traffic Division.

The driver of a 1997 Chevrolet Astro van was northbound when he hit Noriega and kept going, according to police.

Witnesses followed him and blocked the driver’s path, detaining him until officers arrived, an LAPD news release stated.

The driver was identified as Ricardo Avalos, LAPD Detective Felix Padilla said. Avalos was arrested on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter.

Neither drugs nor alcohol were involved, police said.

Avalos, 41, was being held on $50,000 bail, county inmate records show.

Noriega was taken to Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center, but was pronounced dead 7:49 a.m.

Noriega was a fixture in the Boyle Heights neighborhood, where he was known for his years of volunteer work at Resurrection Catholic Church.

He leaves behind a wife, three sons and a daughter.
