A lightning strike that damaged a home, knocked down power lines and started a fire led to the evacuation of two residential blocks in Redondo Beach on Sunday afternoon, according to the fire department.
The lightning bolt, which came amid stormy weather in the Southern California area, hit in the 1600 block of Hayes Lane (map) at about 1:30 p.m., Redondo Beach Fire Department Division Chief Mark Winter said.
It struck one house and knocked down several power lines, including one that caught fire when it hit a driveway, according to Winter.
Two blocks had to be temporarily evacuated as a result, Winter added.
Firefighters were able to put out the flames, but at least one car appeared to have damaged in the blaze, video showed.
No injuries were reported.
The downed power lines also caused an unplanned service outage to about 300 customers, according to Southern California Edison. Power was initially expected to be restored by 11:30 p.m., but that was later revised to 6 p.m. on Monday.
