A 42-year-old man was arrested on the Fourth of July after allegedly hitting a deputy with his truck on a residential street in Fillmore, authorities said Sunday.
Ruben Cendejas Estrada, a Fillmore resident, was charged with assault with a deadly weapon, hit and run, and driving under the influence, according to news release from the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department.
Deputies responded Friday to a disturbance in the 600 block of Manzanita Drive (map), where two separate callers had reported a man driving a red pickup truck “up and down the street, challening people to a fight,” the release said.
Before the deputies arrived, Estrada had exited his vehicle and became involved in a physical altercation at the scene, authorities said.
When one of the deputies attempted to remove the suspect from the pickup, Estrada shifted the truck into drive and accelerated forward, pushing the deputy against a patrol car and onto its hood, according to the Sheriff’s Department .
The suspect drove away and a pursuit ensued, during which Estrada “directed his truck toward a responding patrol unit, nearly missing it,” the release said.
The pickup collided with another vehicle before stopping in a nearby alley, after which the suspect fled on foot, officials said. He was later located at his home and arrested without incident.
The deputy who was pushed onto the hood of the patrol car was transported to Ventura County Medical Center, where he was treated and released.
Estrada was released from custody on Saturday, online records showed. He is scheduled to appear in Ventura County Superior Court on Friday.
