Jesus Canales has been arrested in connection with the 2008 killing of Lucy Preciado, authorities said.

Jesus “Chuey” Canales was flown from Mexico to Los Angeles International Airport on Friday, one day after being detained by Mexican authorities at the request of the U.S. Marshal’s Service, according to a statement released Saturday by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. Officials had developed information that Canales was possibly residing in a small town in the Mexican state of Jalisco.

Sheriff’s homicide detectives presented the case to the Antelope Valley Branch of the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office on July 16, 2008, four days after Lucy Preciado was murdered in her Lancaster apartment, the statement said. The detectives also obtained a felony arrest warrant for murder and child endangerment with a bail amount of $1,400,000.

Investigators originally tracked Canales to New Mexico, Texas, Mexico and El Salvador, the suspect’s native country, the Sheriff’s Department said, adding that Canales was residing in Lancaster when the murder occurred.

The crime was covered extensively by the television show “America’s Most Wanted,” which aired the 911 call made by Preciado’s daughter.

Canales is scheduled to be arraigned in Antelope Valley Superior Court on Monday.

Anyone with information was asked to contact Sgt. Kevin Lloyd or Detective Jeff Leslie of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s Homicide Bureau 323-890-5500.
