Authorities are searching for a driver who fatally struck an 11-year-old girl in a residential area of Highland on Monday night, police said.

About 8:30 p.m., a dark colored SUV was heading southbound on Church Street when the vehicle hit the young pedestrian near Glenheather Drive, according to a Highland Police Department news release.

The driver fled the scene without rendering aid, police said.

Deputies responded and found the unresponsive girl on the side of the road. She was rushed to a hospital where she died.

Relatives on Tuesday night identified the girl as Annika Fullerton. They told KTLA she and her mother had come from Denver to visit relatives in the area.

Fullerton was out for an evening walk with her cousins when the fatal incident occurred.

The victim’s aunt, Donna Eady, told KTLA that the girl’s mother is a cancer survivor and had recently completed treatment.

“She just finished her chemotherapy in December and you know, she was coming back to feeling like she has a normal life. And now her life will never be normal again. Never,” Eady said.

Police did not immediately release a detailed description of the vehicle or driver.
