A 10-year-old boy is in serious condition after he was shot in the head by a gunman who opened fire in a car-to-car shooting on the Cajon Pass of 15 Freeway north of San Bernardino Thursday night. Investigators have been unable to identify a suspect and are searching for leads after the shooting occurred shortly after 9 p.m. in the northbound lanes, north of the 210 Freeway and south of Cleghorn Road, California Highway Patrol Assistant Chief Scott Parker said in a Friday news conference. An unidentified shooter opened fire on the BMW-5 Series car, with one round traveling through a small rear window and striking the boy in the head. The facts leading up to the incident remain unclear, but there doesn’t appear to be a motive for the actual shooting, Parker said. “It doesn’t appear at this time that there was any road rage prior to the incident,” he told reporters. The boy was taken to the Loma Linda University Medical Center in serious condition, the CHP stated. However, his wound was not considered life-threatening and it appears he will recover, according to Parker. The boy’s mother was in the car with him, but Parker was unsure if she was the female driver. Investigators were still gathering information on how many people were in the BMW and what their relationships are. The victims were likely heading to Hesperia, where the family lives, Parker said. Detectives did recover some physical evidence from the scene, including bullet fragments found in victim’s vehicle. But it was still unknown what caliber of gun was used, Parker said. Officials are currently reviewing cameras in several locations in an attempt to identify suspect vehicle and its occupant or occupants. Parker said investigators also have “a few leads” and those involved were still in the process of being interviewed Friday afternoon. Investigators say no witnesses have come forward at this time and are asking the public for help in identifying the vehicle or the shooter involved in the incident. Parker said CHP is treating it as high-profile case. “We’ll put as much manpower toward this as we need to to hopefully take this perpetrator off the streets,” he said.
