An investigation was under way Saturday after a 24-year-old man was found fatally shot in the San Gabriel Riverbed in Lakewood, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

Deputies responded about 10:30 a.m. to a report of a “male not breathing” in the riverbed, just north of Carson Street (map), the agency said in a news release.

They arrived to find the man lying at the bottom of an embankment, suffering from a single gunshot wound to his upper torso, the Sheriff’s Department said.

He was pronounced dead at the scene. His name was not released, pending notification of next of kin.

No other information was immediately available.
