A man being sought in the fatal shooting of his sister at an apartment in the San Gabriel area was arrested Thursday night.

Johnny Goins, 31, was taken into custody around 8:30 p.m. by Riverside County Sheriff’s deputies at a mall in Moreno Valley, according to a release from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

Detectives identified Goins, the victim’s brother, as the suspected shooter earlier in the afternoon. The victim’s 13-year-old son was also injured in the early morning shooting.

At about 6:40 a.m., a report of shots fired brought deputies from the L.A. County Sheriff’s Department’s Temple Station to the home in the 5100 block of Rosemead Boulevard.

A woman suffering from a gunshot wound was pronounced dead inside the apartment, according to a Sheriff’s Department news release.

The 13-year-old boy was also found at the scene, suffering from injuries that were not life threatening. He was expected to be released from the hospital later Thursday.

Family members on scene identified the victim as Tanaya Goins, 33. Goins’ uncle said her 13-year-old son was grazed by a bullet.

“She was a very good person. Everybody loved her,” the uncle said. “I don’t really know what happened.”

The Sheriff’s Department initially said the incident appeared to have “stemmed from a family dispute.”

Johnny Goins was in the process of being booked Thursday night for suspicion of murder, according to the Sheriff’s Department.

Anyone with information was asked to contact the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s Homicide Bureau at 323-890-5500.
