The pearl-covered dress worn by actress Lupita Nyong’o during Sunday’s Academy Awards show was stolen from the West Hollywood hotel where the 2014 Oscar-winner was staying, investigators said Thursday.
Authorities received a call just before 11:30 p.m. Wednesday that the dress was stolen from The London West Hollywood Hotel, according to Lt. William Nash of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
It was unclear if the call was made by Nyong’o, one of her people, or the hotel staff, according to Nash. A news release from the Sheriff’s Department’s West Hollywood Station later stated that a representative of Nyong’o reported the theft.
Detectives believe the burglary took place sometime between 8 a.m. and 9 p.m., Nash said.
Nyong’o was not in the room at the time of the theft, the release stated.
“We’re interviewing the folks who had access to her room during the time this theft occurred,” sheriff’s Lt. Michael White said. “This is a high-dollar theft. We try to solve all crimes in West Hollywood and we wouldn’t give this one any less effort than we would any other crime.”
The dress is decorated with 6,000 white Akoya pearls, according to TMZ. It was valued at $150,000, according to maker Calvin Klein, the sheriff’s news release said.
The dress was one of the most talked-about red carpet apparel choices during the 2015 Oscars, and Nyong’o was on many post-ceremony “best dressed” lists.
Investigators were working with hotel security to see if there is any surveillance video that can aid in the investigation.
Anyone with information was asked to contact the West Hollywood Sheriff’s Station at 310-855-8850.
