Everything you need for flying with a cat

Traveling can be stressful in its own right, but when you add a pet to the equation, it can become even more overwhelming. When you’re traveling — especially if you’re flying with a cat — there is so much to do, like finding the right pet carrier and packing the right gadgets to make traveling easier. Luckily, if you plan ahead and purchase the right equipment, your trip through the airport can be easy and your flight as smooth as possible.

What to expect when taking a cat on a plane

Different airlines have different procedures, so the first thing you want to do before booking your flight is check with the airline to make sure you’re up-to-date on everything required for flying with a cat. Some airlines require a Certificate of Veterinary Inspection for pet travel or an acclimation certificate, both of which must be completed and signed by a federally accredited veterinarian.

If you plan to have your cat fly in the cabin with you, they will have to remain in a carrier that will fit under the seat. The other option is for your cat to fly with the cargo. On average, airlines charge $125 each way for you to carry your cat aboard, but having your cat travel as cargo might cost more on some airlines.

Some cat owners don’t like the idea of flying cargo because it means separating from your pet.

What you’ll need for traveling with a cat on a plane

You need to purchase a sturdy cat carrier. You want it to be spacious enough for your cat to lay comfortably inside for an extended period of time. It’s good to get your cat used to the carrier prior to the flight.

If you haven’t flown with your cat before, it’s worth investing in calming sprays or chews. Even products that help alleviate motion sickness and anxiety can be lifesavers during long flights with your cat. Consult your veterinarian before trying out new calming products or if you think your cat might need medication to travel.

How to fly with a cat: Follow these tips

Withhold food the morning of travel

An empty stomach means your cat is less likely to vomit or feel nauseous while flying. Withhold food the morning of, but be sure to pack ample food, water and cat treats for later.

Arrive early

On the day of your flight, show up earlier than normal so you can check in with the ticket counter. When flying with pets, you can’t check in online, unfortunately. The attendant will have to physically see your pet in the carrier and will ask for any necessary paperwork.

If your cat is flying as cargo, make sure that you know exactly where to drop off your pet. Have a secure cat collar in place with all of your contact information. In the unlikely event you’re separated from your pet, keep a photo handy.

Equip the carrier

Make sure the pet carrier has potty pads inside in case they have to urinate or defecate during the flight. It’s also a good idea to have latex gloves, zip-lock bags and some paper towels on hand in case of pet messes. Carry food, a water bottle and bowl and any necessary medications on you as well.

Prepare for delays

In case you get delayed or stuck at the airport, make sure you have all the essentials. Along with food, water and treats, make sure you have a few cat toys handy. Keep your cat leash and harness in your carry-on and not your checked luggage in case you want to venture out of the airport.
