Republicans unite around Donald Trump

MILWAUKEE (NEXSTAR) – As the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee heads into Day Three one thing is clear: the party is almost completely unified behind former president Donald Trump and even former critics say he’s got their support.

The show of unity is something Republicans are most proud of, including some who were once shunned and attacked by the former president.

Wednesday’s RNC theme is “Make America Strong Again” and it could be said the Republican party is showing a strength of its own: unity.

“Donald Trump has my endorsement. Period,” said former presidential candidate and South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley.

As of Tuesday, Nikki Haley is back in former president’s good graces, getting a plum speaking spot even after relentless attacks on Mr. Trump during the primaries.

It’s a similar story for Florida Governor Ron DeSantis.

“Let’s send Joe Biden back to his basement and let’s send Donald Trump back to the White House,” said DeSantis.

Even Mr. Trump’s running mate, Senator J.D. Vance, once called the president unfit to serve, this week, showing a stunning turnaround similar to so many other Republicans.

“I think what you’re seeing is a party that’s unified, that’s focused on the November elections,” said Rep. Mike Lawler (R-N.Y.).

This week’s convention shows a party firmly behind its nominee, unlike Democrats, with many continuing to agonize over whether President Joe Biden is their best bet come November.

“People support Donald Trump. They support the message, and they want to get him elected in November,” said Rep. David Kustoff (R-Tenn.).

Wednesday’s speakers will focus on the theme of Making America Strong Again, focusing on border security and foreign policy.

Senator Vance is expected to formally accept the nomination Wednesday night and will be the keynote speaker.
