Skateboarding Teen Dies After Being Struck by SUV in Yorba Linda

A teenage boy was struck and killed by an SUV while riding his skateboard Sunday morning in a Yorba Linda neighborhood, authorities said.

Logan Wells, 16, was struck by a Kia Sorrento that was traveling eastbound on Bastanchury Road, near Secretariat Way (map), about 4:45 a.m., according to investigators.

Logan Wells, 16, was often seen on his skateboard, friends said.

The driver of the vehicle, a 61-year-old man, stopped and called 911, said Lt. Jeff Hallock of the Orange County Sheriff’s Department.

Wells was transported to Western Medical Center in Santa Ana, where he later died.

A preliminary investigation by the Sheriff’s Department’s Major Accident Reconstruction Team “indicated that alcohol on the part of the driver was not suspected,” Hallock said.

The driver was not cited or arrested.

On Sunday afternoon, friends and loved ones used flowers, candles and skateboards to erect a makeshift memorial near the scene of the accident. They also wrote memorial inscriptions on the sidewalk in multicolored chalk.

Wells’ classmates said they would honor him on Monday by wearing bucket hats and Hawaiian shirts — two staples of his wardrobe — at El Dorado High School in Placentia.
