A passenger was killed and driver injured in a single-car collision early Saturday in Lake Elsinore, authorities said.

Anthony Borrego, 40, of Lake Elsinore, died after the Honda Civic in which he was riding collided with a road sign and traffic light near the intersection of Lake Hill Street and Alberhill Ranch Road, about 2 miles south of the 15 Freeway (map), the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department said in a press release.

Officers responded to the scene about 1:51 a.m., minutes after a caller reported the crash, the release said.

An investigation indicated that the Honda was traveling on Lake Street when the driver lost control of the vehicle, according to the Sheriff’s Department.

The driver, whose name was not released, exited the car after the collision and was later transported to a hospital, officials said. The passenger was pronounced dead at the scene by Cal Fire personnel.

The intersection was expected to be closed for about five hours as an investigation got underway.

Anyone with information is asked to call Officer Wisniewski of the Lake Elsinore Police Department at 951-245-3300, or after hours at 951-776-1099.
