Months after being told her husband had just a 10 percent chance of waking up from a coma, a Georgia newlywed who refused to give up hope was overjoyed when he defied the odds and woke up.
Matt and Danielle Davis had been married only seven months when the then 22-year-old was seriously injured in a motorcycle collision in 2010.
The crash left him with a severe traumatic brain injury and he was placed on life support. His young bride was given the devastating news that there was a 90 percent chance he would never wake up from the coma.
Doctors recommended she remove her young husband from live support.
“They said that if it was them, they would pull the plug. That’s what they’d want their family to do,” Danielle Davis told WTOC.
But she refused.
“I knew that God could get us through that. I didn’t think that it was too big for God,” she said.
The hospital sent him home and Danielle Davis, then 24, took care of her husband with her husband’s help.
“Feeding tube, adult ‘briefs,’ sponge baths, over 20 medications, physical therapy, turning him every 2 hrs to prevent bed sores, etc.,” she wrote on a GoFundMe page.
He remained in a coma for three months.
Then one day, he spoke.
“He said ‘I’m trying,'” Danielle Davis told the Georgia television station.
She recalled on the GoFundMe page that it was the “greatest thing” she had ever heard.
But when he woke up, Matt couldn’t remember the past three years, including his marriage and the death of his father.
“I didn’t know my dad was dead. I didn’t know I was married. I didn’t know anything,” he said to the TV station.
But in the time that has passed since the crash, Danielle Davis said her husband has made incredible progress and is no longer on medications today.

He has struggled to regain his long-term memory, however, and is unable to remember her from before the crash.
He may not remember dating or marrying his wife, but as Matt Davis said in a recent interview with ABC News, “I’m sure glad I married her.”
Danielle Davis said she set up the GoFundMe to help cover costs as he continues his rehabilitation so her husband can reach “his full potential.”
