At least 100 sharks took part in the feeding frenzy, which occurred last Thursday close to the shore at Cape Lookout National Seashore off the Crystal Coast, according to a description of the video on YouTube.

The dramatic footage showed some of the sharks nearly beaching themselves as they thrashed about in the water in search of a meal.

Beachgoers observed the unknown species of shark swimming in an out of the surf for roughly five minutes, according to the description.

The video, which was posted to Brian Recker’s YouTube page, was shot by Donnie Griggs, an avid waterman who swims, dives and surfs at Cape Lookout often.

It has been viewed nearly 100,000 times since being posted on Monday.

Recker stressed that despite the presence of the shark, Cape Lookout and the surrounding beaches of eastern North Carolina were “extremely safe for swimming.”

“The presence of these sharks and large schools of fish is actually a sign of a very healthy ecosystem,” Recker wrote.

On his Facebook page, Recker described the incident as a “sharknado,” a reference to the 2013 made-for-television movie about a freak storm that lifts sharks out of water and deposits them onto land.
