Newly released body camera video shows a New Mexico police officer performing CPR on an 8-month-old baby, an act that the young girl’s mother said saved her life.

When her daughter Karly would not wake up in the early afternoon hours of May 14, a frantic Alyssia Rios dialed 911, according to Albuquerque-area television station KOAT.

Officer Martin Smith of the Albuquerque Police Department responded to her home and immediately began performing CPR on the unconscious child, the video showed. Smith rubbed Karly’s chest and gave her a few light breaths.

Karly’s fingers then began to move, and she woke up shortly after, much to her mother’s relief.

“If it wasn’t for him who knows what the outcome of the situation could have been,” Rios told the station. “I really don’t know what I would have done … the paramedics could have came, but what if they would have got there too late? It was the officer who really helped her.”

For his part, Smith said he was just doing his job.

“That’s what makes this job good,” he told KOAT. “That’s the good part of it.”
