A 17-year-old student was hospitalized Wednesday after being stabbed at Rancho Cucamonga High School – apparently because of a conversation he had with a girl – and two boys were detained in connection with the attack.
Officers were called to the school at 1:20 p.m. for a report of a stabbing, Deputy Jacob Bailey said. They found the 11th grader, whose name is Mylon, on scene suffering from a stab wound.
The teen was taken to a hospital where he was recovering late Wednesday.
“I know it was five kids who jumped him and one of course stabbed him,” Anasa Lavender, the victim’s mother, told KTLA.
Lavender said her son was attacked because of a girl.
“I guess the girl didn’t want him talking to her and he said something to her, and then her cousins came in and got him,” she said.
Amid a search for the attackers, the high school and nearby Lightfoot Elementary were placed on lockdown “in an abundance of caution,” the Rancho Cucamonga Police Department said in a Facebook post.
About 3:30 p.m., police said two people had been detained and the lockdowns were lifted.
The two taken into custody are juveniles, according to Bailey. The suspects and the victim are all believed to attend the school, he said.
The stabbing occurred outside a classroom on the west side of campus.
The student was cut with an “undetermined object,” Chaffey Joint Union High School District Superintendent Mat Holton said in a statement. He is stable and working with police to help identified “all the individuals” involved, Holton said.
Holton said three people were detained for questioning.
A deputy who was in the area detained an individual who was seen running from campus, Lt. Frank Montanez said at the scene.
There were multiple witnesses to the stabbing, Montanez said.
Lavender said Mylon is a football player who she described as friendly and down to earth. His wound is going to take at least one month to heal, his mother added.
