Whittier man accused of trying to kill 7-year-old brother

A man from Whittier has been charged with attempted murder after he allegedly stabbed his 7-year-old brother at their home.

Cristian Gutierrez, 24, is accused of stabbing his younger brother in the 9500 block of Ben Hur Avenue last Thursday.

Authorities responded to the scene and discovered the young boy suffering from several stab wounds. The boy was taken to a local hospital and was listed in critical condition at the time.

Gutierrez was also briefly hospitalized, authorities said.

Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón announced the charges against Gutierrez and said his thoughts are with the child and his family during this traumatic experience.

“[The] emotional impact of such an incident is immeasurable, especially when it involves a member of your own family,” Gascón said in a news release. “Our office’s goal is to ensure that the responsible individual is held accountable for their actions, and also to ensure that the vulnerable among us are protected from such harm.”

Gascón said Gutierrez inflicted “great bodily injury” on his brother when he allegedly stabbed him with a knife.

Gutierrez was expected in court Tuesday and it was recommended he be held on $1.075 million bail.

If convicted, Gutierrez could face a sentence of life in prison.
