A wayward seal pup was rescued recently after wandering nearly 100 miles away from Bodega Bay and ending up in front of a home in Fremont, according to police.
The northern fur seal was located Thursday on Osgood Road, between Auto Mall Parkway and Washington Boulevard, in the front yard of a residence, the Fremont Police Department stated in a Facebook post.
“It was just adorable. I mean, this little brown thing, just a baby seal — and it was looking up at you with these big old brown eyes,” Jena Shellenbarger, who found the small marine mammal, told Bay Area television station KGO.
She appeared uninjured and was rescued by two Fremont patrol officers and an Animal Service officer, according to the post.
The 9-month-old pup was wrapped in a towel and transported to the area’s Tri-City Animal Shelter before being taken by the California Marine Mammal Center.
She was initially nicknamed “Ozzie” by police; they later learned her real name was Kumofur.
The young seal was previously rescued four months, and had just been released into Bodega Bay earlier this month, according to KGO. The bay is nearly 100 miles away from where Kumofur was found.
She should have been headed north to Alaska, but apparently “got lost” and went in the wrong direction.
“Sometimes they follow a school of fish and just keep going until they realize they are lost. Then they start wandering,” the center explained in a comment below the Police Department’s Facebook post.
The seal pup would be released this time “with a little waterproof map,” the center wrote in a tongue-in-cheek comment.
