A water main break off Mulholland Drive left a key route over the Santa Monica Mountains closed to traffic for hours on Tuesday.

Flooding was first reported about 7:15 a.m. in the 3200 block of Benedict Canyon Drive in Beverly Crest (map), according to the Los Angeles Fire Department.

Aerial video showed water running south down the canyon road toward Beverly Hills.

Benedict Canyon Drive was expected to be closed for about seven hours, the Los Angeles Police Department advised shortly after 10 a.m.

The road was closed from Hutton Drive north to Mulholland Drive, LAPD said. The route links Beverly Hills to the San Fernando Valley.

“Plan your route accordingly,” advised the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power, which was repairing the break.
