A 26-year-old Fontana man died Sunday evening after the car he was driving collided with a tour bus at an intersection in Bloomington, authorities said.
Five of the 17 people who were on the bus suffered minor injuries, according to Officer Brian Alvarez of the California Highway Patrol.
The deceased victim was the only occupant of the car, a white Dodge Charger, Alvarez said. His name was not released pending notification of next of kin.
Firefighters responded shortly before 7 p.m. to Valley Boulevard and Linden Avenue (map), where the car struck the side of the bus, said Battalion Chief Steve Laseter of the San Bernardino County Fire Department.
After being extricated from the Dodge, the driver was transported to Kaiser Permanente’s Fontana Medical Center, where he later died, officials said.
At least four others, who suffered minor injuries, were also taken to hospitals.
Officials initially said nine people were hurt in the crash.
A preliminary investigation indicated the driver of the car was traveling a high rate of speed just before the collision and failed to yield at an intersection, Alvarez said.
The tour bus was apparently owned by a private company that transported passengers to casinos, Laseter said.
The intersection was likely to remain closed until about 1 a.m. Monday, according to the CHP.
