A gunman suspected of stealing a car was arrested Sunday night after a SWAT team conducted a search in a Pico Rivera neighborhood, authorities said.

The man was taken into custody on a rooftop near the intersection of Telegraph Road and Rosemead Boulevard (map), the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s Special Enforcement Bureau said on Twitter at 8:30 p.m.

The incident began when a deputy approached the armed man, who then fled, according to a sheriff’s spokeswoman. A perimeter was set up, and residents were advised to avoid the area while the search was underway.
