The 2017 Golden Globes opened on Sunday with Jimmy Fallon paying homage to La La Land, the critically acclaimed film that was nominated for seven awards and swept all categories.
The original musical broke the Golden Globes record for most wins by a film, taking home several awards including Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy for actor Ryan Gosling, Best Motion Picture, Best Director and a Best Actress win for actress Emma Stone.
Moonlight, one of the year’s most celebrated films, was nominated in six categories and won Best Drama Motion Picture.
Mahershala Ali has been lauded for his role as Juan in the coming-of-age film but did not take home the Best Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture award.
HBO also went home empty handed for the first time in years despite 14 nominations. John Turturro, who played lawyer John Stone in the HBO drama series The Night Of, told KTLA it was honor to be nominated.
“It is great to be invited and to be acknowledged,” said Turturro. “It’s great because people, the audience, really loves the show and has really embraced it. It’s growing and it’s doing really well overseas. So for us this is like the cherry on top of the cake. I get my enjoyment from doing my work.”
The Golden Globes fun began with A-list stars and Hollywood’s biggest talent walking the red carpet with style earlier that evening.
“It’s a very lovely feeling to be here,” said Dev Patel, a nominee for Best Supporting Actor for his role in Lion. “I’m very nervous to be honest, but it’s a big celebration. I live a very simple life so to come here under this fishbowl of lights and cameras is very intense.”
Regina King, a 2015 nominee for her role in American Crime, had just as much excitement for Sunday’s awards as she did two years ago.
“I don’t think I’ll ever get use to this,” said King on the red carpet dressed in a stunning silver gown.
Other major wins for the night include FX show Atlanta for Best Comedy Series, The People V. O.J. Simpson for Best TV Film, Tracee Ellis Ross, Blackish, for Best Actress in a Comedy Series, The Crown for Best Drama TV Series, Casey Affleck, Manchester by the Sea, for Best Actor in a Drama Motion Picture and Viola Davis, Fences, for Best Actress in a Drama Motion Picture.
