Two people sustained injuries Tuesday when a plane they were on crashed in Big Bear and then caught on fire, officials said.
The single-engine Piper PA-28 came down in a vacant lot at the corner of Meadow Lane and Nana Avenue around 1:25 p.m., when the pilot was attempting to land at Big Bear City Airport, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.
The two people onboard were pulled out by bystanders, the Big Bear Fire Department said.
The pilot and passenger sustained moderate to severe injuries and were airlifted to a trauma unit, according to the department.
Responding crews observed a fire in the aircraft, a nearby fence and an outbuilding that sustained minor damage.
Sky5 footage showed parts of the plane scattered among trees and a structure near Meadow Lane.
Electricity in the neighborhood was knocked out by the plane crash, the Fire Department said, and crews could be seen working to fix power lines in the immediate area.
The FAA and and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the matter. Information on what caused the crash was no yet available.
