Suspect Detained After Hawthorne Police Officer Is Shot at Manhattan Beach Shopping Area

What started as a domestic dispute at a Marriott hotel in Hawthorne Sunday morning escalated into a police shootout at a nearby shopping center in Manhattan Beach, during which an officer and the suspect both sustained gunshot wounds, officials said.

People in the area of Rosecrans Avenue and Aviation Boulevard were asked to shelter in place as law enforcement officers from multiple jurisdictions descended on the scene around 9:30 a.m.

Hawthorne police had initially responded to a call about an armed male chasing a female in the parking lot or lobby of the TownePlace Suites by Marriott on 14400 Aviation Blvd., Chief Michael Ishiii told reporters at a news conference after the incident.

The officers subsequently found somebody who matched the male’s description running across the street toward a shopping center in the southwest corner of Rosecrans Avenue and Aviation Boulevard, Ishii said. When they confronted the suspect, gunfire broke out.

An officer, who’s a 15-year veteran with the Police Department, was shot in the leg and was taken to a trauma center, Ishii said. He was shot in front of the REI Manhattan Beach store, Hawthorne police Sgt. Chris Wiley previously told KTLA.

The officer was “alert” at the hospital, the chief said.

The perpetrator shot at officers at least one other time before he was taken into custody, according to police. That’s when police discovered that he had also suffered a gunshot wound during the shootout, Ishii said.

The chief said he does not know the extent of the shooter’s injury.

“Initial officers on scene were telling me that he was dressed in some type of military fatigue, and the weapon that he had was some sort of assault rifle or TEC-9 type, high-power, high-capacity weapon,” Ishiii said.

A total of two people were transported to the hospital, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

Witness Kevin McCullough said he started recording videos from his vehicle after a male being followed by police near a hotel started running between traffic.

“I didn’t think he was going to pull out a gun, but before I knew it, there was massive gunfire,” McCullough told KTLA. “And then I saw the police officer down. I saw several police dragging him around the building.”

McCullough managed to record several videos from the scene, including that of a man running on a sidewalk on Rosecrans Avenue as officers followed behind. That person’s clothing appears to match Ishii’s description of what the shooter was wearing.

In another video taken by McCullough , several loud shots are heard.

The relationship between the shooter and the female he was allegedly chasing at the hotel is unclear, Ishii said, but investigators are currently interviewing her. She does not appear to be hurt, the chief added.

Detectives are working on finding the perpetrator’s vehicle and searching the hotel room that he was in, Ishii said.

Authorities were still clearing the area as of 10:40 a.m. California Highway Patrol has issued a SigAlert for the northbound and southbound lanes of Aviation Boulevard between 135th Street and Rosecrans Avenue.
