Los Angeles County sheriff’s divers on Tuesday temporarily suspended their search for a possible second victim at Pyramid Lake, where a 52-year-old man drowned in a boating incident Sunday morning, authorities said.
Personnel from the Sheriff’s Department’s emergency services detail will resume their efforts Wednesday at the lake, located about 17 miles north of Castaic, according to news release.
Parks bureau deputies found Rick Tanovan underwater, caught amongst foliage about 15 feet from the shore, after a man on a jet ski reported seeing “something suspicious” in the lake, the department said. The deputies pulled Tanovan out of the water and administered CPR, but were unable to revive him.
The West Covina man had apparently drowned, officials said, adding that the official cause of death had not yet been determined.
Tonovan may have been accompanied on the boat by a friend, identified as 64-year-old Jack Thirasack of Baldwin Park, the Sheriff’s Department said. Family members told investigators that the two men had gone to the lake together.
“Thirasack’s fishing license was found in the water on Sunday, near the partially submerged boat that was about 30 yards from the shore,” the statement said.
Divers from the L.A. County sheriff’s and fire departments have searched the area for three days, using sonar equipment, watercraft and an underwater cadaver dog. The dog also assisted in a search of Chumash Island, in the south part of the lake, near the area where the boat was found, according to authorities.
