A San Luis Obispo man has been arrested in connection with the alleged kidnapping and torture of a 27-year-old woman, police said on Tuesday.

An investigation into the incident began when the victim showed up late Monday at a Chevron gas station with “significant injuries” to her entire body that included burns marks, bruising lacerations, scratches and “extreme” swelling, a news release from the San Luis Obispo Police Department stated.

The victim had fled to the gas station after escaping from the residence of 33-year-old Timothy John Hayes, where she allegedly had been held against her will and tortured, according to police.

Hayes had allegedly bound the woman with tape before assaulting her for two hours with a knife, scissors, and a pool cue, police said. He was also accused of burning her with kitchen utensils.

According to the Los Angeles Times, the suspect and the victim had been dating for “a couple of days” when the incident occurred.

Hayes was taken into custody at his residence in the 500 block of Jeffrey Drive on Tuesday, according to the release.

Police said that he was possibly under the influence of a controlled substance at the time of his arrest.

Hayes was booked into San Luis Obispo County Jail on numerous charges, including torture, kidnapping, mayhem, false imprisonment and domestic battery.

His bail has been set at $1 million.
