The person who fatally stabbed a woman whose body was found in a Rolling Hills Estates mall parking garage on May 3 remained at large on Tuesday, authorities said.
Sheriff’s officials investigating the death of Susan Leeds, 66, provided an update on the case in an event streamed on Facebook Live.
Deputies said Jeffrey Leyson—the man they interviewed as a person of interest but did not arrest in the case due to insufficient evidence—was in a facility obtaining treatment. He had been taken into custody for being under the influence of a controlled substance, according to authorities.
Officials said they had multiple leads but did not provide specific details. They advised the community to be vigilant, but reiterated that they still believed the killing to be an isolated incident and there was no evidence to suggest the killer remained in the area.
Authorities responded to the parking garage at Promenade on the Peninsula at around 12:20 p.m. on May 3 after mall patrons called about a body, officials said.
Leeds, who lived in Rancho Palos Verdes, was found inside her Mercedes-Benz SUV with multiple stab wounds on her upper torso, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
L.A. County fire officials told the Daily Breeze that her throat was cut. She was pronounced dead on the scene.
The incident was the first homicide reported in Rolling Hills Estates in nine years, according to the Daily Breeze.
Officials said they did not suspect the killing of the victim—survived by a husband and two adult children—stemmed from a domestic incident.
