Five residents were displaced early Wednesday after a tree that was described as being “historic” fell on apartment buildings in Duarte, damaging multiple units, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department.
A portion of the tree initially fell toward the buildings located in the 1800 block of Huntington Drive (map) on Monday, Gerarld Gonzales with the L.A. County Fire Department said.
The rest of the tree, which residents said was more than 100 years old and had been protected by the city, came down early Wednesday.
Three units were impacted by the downed tree, according to Gonzales.
One of the residents at the apartment building heard the tree crash. She described the sound it made as being earthquake-like.
“It was definitely earthquake-sounding, actually probably even worse, because after the thud then you hear the rustling of all the leaves and you’re not even sure what fell outside of your home,” said Diane Ruiz.
The displaced residents, three males and two females, were not injured. All five residents had places to stay, and the Red Cross was not needed, Gonzales added.
It was not immediately clear to what extent the apartment units had been damaged, or if and when the residents would be able to return to their units.
