California state fire officials and police in Gardena have seized more than 120,000 pounds, or 60 tons, of illegal fireworks in one of the single largest busts on record, officials announced on Tuesday.
The raid occurred early Saturday morning at an undisclosed location, according to CAL FIRE. Several people were arrested.
“The seizure included illegal dangerous and public display fireworks up to eight inches in diameter and over 2,000 illegal, destructive devices and 10 pounds of bulk homemade explosives,” the agency said in a statement.
The State Fire Marshal’s Arson and Bomb Unit responded to assist police with processing the “extraordinary amount” of explosives.
No further information was released.
Anyone with information about the case was urged to email the CAL FIRE – OSFM Arson and Bomb Unit at arsonbomb@fire.ca.gov.
Aerial fireworks are illegal in California except for professional displays. Only those labeled “Safe and Sane” are permitted — and only in communities that allow them. CAL FIRE says that those caught transporting or selling illegal fireworks can face fines of up to $50,000 and one year in jail.
