Police fatally shoot 2nd knife-wielding man in Historic South-Central on Saturday

The Los Angeles Police Department reported that a second knife-wielding man was fatally shot by police in Historic South-Central on Saturday.

The first man was fatally shot shortly before 11 a.m.

The second shooting occurred just before 5 p.m. at 908 E. Adams Blvd., according to Officer Orris.

Police received reports of a man who was chasing people with a knife and threatening to harm others, said Orris, who added that the man might have been suffering from mental illness or been suicidal.

Detective Meghan Aguilar said when officers arrived, they found the man was armed with a cleaver, and he refused officers’ commands to drop the weapon.

Police used less-lethal rounds before they used firearms, Aguilar said, and the man was struck by gunfire.

“When given an option, we always want to use the minimum amount of force needed … Ultimately though, as the situation escalates, we are at times forced to use lethal force, as we were this evening,” Aguilar said.

He was taken to a local hospital, where he succumbed to his wounds, Aguilar said.
