No officers were injured in the incident, which occurred near Haskell Avenue and Victory Boulevard (map), said LAPD Officer Julie Stone.

West Valley Division officers responded about 2:45 p.m. to a call of a suspect armed with a knife who intended to harm himself, said police Lt. Alan Hamilton. When they arrived at the intersection they found a man matching the description given by the caller, Hamilton said.

Police followed the man down the street, “trying to get him to relinquish the weapon” and making several attempts to take him into custody, the lieutenant said.

When the suspect became “aggressive” with the officers they opened fire, striking him, according to Hamilton.

A motorist said she and her husband witnessed part of the encounter, describing the man as “really bloody” before the shooting occurred.

“We heard … four shots,” Karen Sanchez said. “They shot him.”

It was unclear how many times he was struck.

News video showed investigators collecting evidence in a drainage ditch along Haskell, just west of the 405 Freeway.

The street was closed between Victory and Haynes Street. The shutdown was expected to last for several hours, the Los Angeles Police Department said shortly after 3:30 p.m. on Twitter. Motorists and pedestrians were advised to avoid the area.
