Police on Sunday called off a search for two Vietnamese girls and said they were never at risk, despite being reported missing at Los Angeles International Airport after becoming separated from their tourist group.

Ly Camly Vuong, 12, and Linh Huyen Cao, 17, were last seen speaking with a Caucasian man in the Terminal 7 baggage-claim area about 7:10 p.m., according to Rob Pedregon, a spokesman for the Los Angeles World Airports Police Division. Authorities initially said Vuong was 13.

Officials released a photo and description of the girls, who do not speak English, and asked for help in locating them.

But the investigation was later closed after investigators concluded that family members were aware of the girls’ plan to willfully leave their school group, police said on Twitter.

The matter was turned over to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, authorities said.
