A pickup truck crashed into an apartment building in Oxnard Monday afternoon, leaving two children in critical condition, authorities said.
A 2-year-old girl and an 8-year-old boy were pinned under the truck after it plowed into their bedroom, and suffered critical injuries, officials reported.
The driver of the truck was originally transported from the scene in critical condition but was later listed as stable, officials said.
A 16-year-old girl who was in the apartment at the time of the crash had minor injuries. A pregnant woman who witnessed the crash was also taken to the hospital for observation after she apparently started hyperventilating, according to the Ventura County Star.
Firefighters were called to the scene in the 1600 block of California Street about 4:30 p.m.
A half-ton pickup truck went all the way into the building, according to Ventura County Fire Department spokesman Mike Lindbery.
Several neighbors, including Junior Nunez, rushed to the scene to help.
“I noticed he wasn’t stopping and I said he’s not going to stop so me and a neighbor who lives in one of these house just started running and trying to help,” Nunez said.
Randy Latimer, a commander with the Oxnard Police Department, said the driver was trapped inside the truck and had to be cut out.
Investigators were interviewing the driver Monday night to determine if alcohol or drugs contributed to the crash.
Aerial video from Sky5 showed the vehicle inside a building beneath some trees. Dozens of people were watching nearby, and multiple fire engines and ambulances were on scene.
All lanes on Gisler Avenue between Fir and Date streets were closed, the city of Oxnard said on Twitter.
The Oxnard Police Department also responded to the crash and will be investigating the incident.
