A shooting inside a Baldwin Park gas station left a man hospitalized late Thursday, officials said.

The attack was reported about 8:15 p.m. at a 76 Station at Los Angeles Street and Merced Avenues, according to Los Angeles County Fire Department Dispatch Supervisor Michael Pittman.

The victim, initially described as a man in his 40s, who was a customer at the gas station prior to the shooting, was taken to a hospital for treatment, Baldwin Park Police Department Sgt. Darryl Kosaka said. His condition was unclear as he underwent surgery Thursday night.

A description of the shooter was not available, but police said it appeared the shooter and victim knew one another prior to the shooting.

Police were in the process of obtaining store surveillance camera footage in hopes of generating leads, Kosaka said.

No further details were available.

Police cordoned off the gas station with yellow crime scene tape. A single white car was parked within the crime scene.
