A USC student was in critical condition Thursday after a car plowed into a group of four pedestrians walking near the University of Southern California campus, police said.
The collision occurred around noon at the intersection of West Jefferson Boulevard and McClintock Avenue (map) in University Park, southwest of downtown L.A., according to officer Rosario Herrera of the Los Angeles Police Department.
Police and rescue personnel surrounded a silver four-door sedan that appeared to have crashed head-on into a light pole, aerial video from Sky 5 showed.
Four pedestrians were injured in the crash, which also left the driver hospitalized for a “medical condition,” according to officer Jack Richter of the Los Angeles Police Department.
“It appears that the driver may have suffered a medical emergency,” said LAPD Capt. David Kowalski of the South Traffic Division. “She lost control of the vehicle, went through a red light and hit not only four pedestrians crossing but hit a light pole.”
One of the pedestrians, identified as a student at USC, was taken to the hospital in critical condition, Richter said. The three other pedestrians involved were treated and released at the scene, Richter said.
A desk officer later said all four were students, but Richter could not confirm that.
Kowalski, who was on scene, said two of the pedestrians were hospitalized and he did not have information on their condition. The other two were treated at the scene, Kowalski said.
Video from the scene showed the silver sedan severely damaged, and a street signal and “McClintock Avenue” sign knocked to the ground.
The crash occurred across from the Gate 5 entrance onto the USC campus and outside Cardinal Garden Apartments, which houses a number of USC students.
