Pacoima crash kills 1, injures 6 as car slams into apartment building

One person died and six people were injured after a traffic collision in Pacoima Sunday night, officials said.

The driver of a white pickup truck was making a right turn from Mercer Street onto Laurel Canyon Boulevard when he was struck by a dark-colored Dodge Charger heading south on Laurel Canyon about 8:30 p.m., according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

The driver of the pickup was killed on impact, police said, and two of the sedan’s four occupants were trapped inside the car before they were ultimately freed by the Los Angeles Fire Department.

While the LAFD initially reported that four people were injured, the department later confirmed that six people were hurt in the two-vehicle crash.

Five people were taken by ambulance to nearby hospitals for treatment: two adult men in moderate condition and three minors in fair to moderate condition, according to the LAFD.

A sixth person, an 11-year-old boy, was asleep in an apartment in the 10400 block of Laurel Canyon Boulevard when the collision sent the Charger careening into the side of the building.

Debris came in through a window and injured the boy, but the child was treated on scene by LAFD personnel, who determined that he did not need further aid and was in good condition, police said.

The investigation is continuing and police have not yet determined who was at fault, but speed could have been a factor, according to authorities.
