Thousands of residents of Los Angeles city and county found themselves temporarily without power Christmas morning as high winds whipped through the region.
Areas affected included Palms, Mid-Wilshire, Chinatown, South Park, North Hollywood, North Hills, Van Nuys and Sherman Oaks, according to a spokeswoman for the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power.
Initially, around 6:30 a.m., about 11,500 customers were affected, LADWP spokeswoman Carol Tucker.
Crews worked to fix outages caused by high winds, and the number without power had dropped over the day to about 1,300, mostly in West L.A., DWP stated on Twitter. About 50 Westwood customers remained without power due a fallen tree, the utility said.
By 4:15 p.m., roughly 500 customers remained without power, DWP tweeted, noting that the largest problems had been fixed.
Elsewhere in Los Angeles County, about 1,230 customers served by Southern California Edison remained without power as of Thursday night, according to the utility’s outage center. The greatest number of Edison customers affected was in Hawthorne, where more than 900 had no electricity as of 9:30 p.m.
In the Irvine area, more than 110 remained without power Christmas night. Earlier in the afternoon, Southern California estimated that roughly 6,200 customers lacked power.
A handful of customers remained affected in Riverside County, were power was restored to more 2,500 who had lost service earlier in the day.
